Lugh & The Tuatha De Danann

As a devout follower of Paganism and a scholar of Celtic mythology, I appreciate Lugh and his central role in Tuatha Dé Danann. Lugh is first mentioned in the ancient Cath Maig Tuired, where Tuatha Dé Danann defeats Fir Bolg to become the god of Ireland.

It is said that Lugh became part of the Tuatha Dé Danann through his mother Eithne, a member of the people of the goddess Danu. He was noticed by Tuatha Dé Danann for his impressive skills and talents, especially as a master of many arts and crafts as well as a skilled martial artist. . Lugh is known to be the god of many things, including arts, crafts, war, and harvest. He is also known as a god of light and sun which, in the sense of his name, means "one who shines".

Some believe that Lugh's association with arts and crafts can be explained by his mastery of many skills and is credited with inventing the art of metalworking. Others say that as a god of war, it is believed that he will bring victory to those who worship him. It is also associated with plants because of its role in soil fertility. In ancient times, Lugh was revered in festivals such as Lughnasadh, which celebrated his role in the harvest. Today, many modern Pagans and Wiccans continue to honor Lugh and invoke his power in their rituals and ceremonies.

As a monk, I find it fairly easy to incorporate the reverence of Lugh into my daily practice. I begin my day with a prayer to Lugh, asking for his guidance and protection throughout the day. I also make sure to take the time to practice my own skills and craft, to honor its association with the arts. In addition, I try to combine acts of kindness and generosity, as these are said to be qualities that Lugh cherishes. In short, Lugh was an important deity of the Tuatha Dé Danann, celebrated for his many skills and talents, as well as his role in fertility and victory. As a monk, I find incorporating his reverence into my daily practice a meaningful and enriching experience. And, I believe that worshiping Lugh can benefit anyone who wants to honor the ancient gods and incorporate their wisdom into their daily lives.

A New Meditation Experience: Lumenate

I am always looking for new ways to bring different meditations into my daily practice. As a contemplative, the inner work is much more important than the outer work, so to speak. As a technopagan, I sometimes use technology to assist with these practices. Now, I have most of the meditation apps that everyone else has and I use them sometimes to a greater or lesser degree, but for the most part, they supplement my meditation practices by switching things up sometimes. I had the complete pleasure of finding an app called 'Lumenate' on the iPhone app store. I downloaded it and followed the instructions it gave me. Almost immediately, I had an extremely powerful experience. So, naturally, I want to tell you about it!

Lumenate is an app that provides a unique and effortless meditative experience using stroboscopic light sequences accompanied by music or sounds. It helps to induce altered states of consciousness, deepening and enhancing meditation practices. The app is extremely user-friendly and customizable, allowing me to choose the length of time for my meditation and select the sounds or music I want to accompany. The stroboscopic lights are timed perfectly with the music, creating a synesthesia that takes me deeper into my meditations. It truly feels like an upgraded version of using candles or incense during meditation.

Lumenate is a company that uses sensory entrainment to help people achieve better mental states. The technology flashes lights at certain frequencies in order to gently guide the brain into a desired state. Once the flashing is removed, the brain returns to its normal patterns. This technology can be used for a variety of reasons, such as improving focus, increasing creativity, or helping with sleep. By simply wearing headphones for a few minutes, individuals can experience noticeable improvements in their mental state without the use of medication or harmful substances. It is a safe and non-invasive way to enhance one's mental well-being.

My Lumenate Experience

From what I've researched, Lumenate is designed to provide one-of-a-kind experiences for each individual in a few different ways. The sessions provide a vehicle to explore you subconscious mind and your emotions. While this can sound scary, I can promise you that my experience was one of growth and healing.

My first meditation with Lumenate was the introductory experience that only lasts about 5 minutes. It told me that I should wear decent-quality headphones and turn the lights off -- the darker the better. It also told me about a few different ways to hold the phone, as you need to turn the phone around so that the camera flash is facing your eyes. They say that you can sit in a regular meditative position and hold the phone with your arms, but I find that too distracting. I am currently looking to grab a small tripod to mount my phone to for future sessions, but for my first session, I was lying on my side on the sofa, facing the back cushion. There, I propped the phone up against the cushion facing my face and the session began. And oh, did it begin!

I closed my eyes (as you have to do unless you want to be blinded by the strobe effect) and the music began softly. A voice came on the audio and explained a few very simple things about relaxing the eyes and that you can adjust the distance from the light pulses to your eyes to vary the intensity of the effect. Mine was pretty close to my face, so that may have influenced my experience. Then, the flashes began.

At first, my eyes adjusted to the flashes, and I slowly began to see faint white/gray spots, and they would be in a pattern. That pattern began to pulse in and out like a kaleidoscope. Then, various colors would come and go. Orange, blue... oh the prettiest blue I had ever seen in my life. It was the bright and deep blue that you would expect to see in a paradisical sky. This blue turned into a blue fractal, almost like a mosaic with oversized pieces, but they would move as if in a stop-motion video. Once this faded, the beautiful white light began to overtake my vision and would sway from the left to the right, almost like an oversized pendulum. From here, I began to travel through a bright tunnel toward an even brighter horizon, and this is where coherent images began to manifest. I saw people, or what I perceived to be people, along a golden-yellow dirt path next to a river, and a set of middle-eastern style buildings rising up from the horizon almost like a utopian city. With a flash, I saw a powerful explosion of white light as the edges of the explosion quickly slowed and melted down the area I could see. It was here that I had an extremely overwhelming sense of unity with the entire unified field of consciousness. I was everything, and everything was me.

Conclusion

Maybe you prefer traditional meditation. I still do, but there is something to be said about Lumenate and the experiences it creates. It is all subjective and is a great tool to use to inspire continued work with your subconscious mind and the contemplation of reality. As an endnote, I paid for the full subscription for Lumenate ($6 a month) and I am not being paid to review this app. This is my genuine experience and I believe that people need to be made aware of these incredible advancements in the area of consciousness science.

Seasonal Spotlight: On The Autumn Equinox

Autumn Equinox

As we head into the darker half of the year, Mabon is an excellent time of reflection for what you have accomplished in your life. What is working? What is not working? Are you where you want to be, or does something in your life need to change? The equinox is an excellent time for working magic pertaining to harmony and balance. Such magic may include protection, abundance, prosperity and self-improvement. By choosing to be grateful for the things that you have instead of regretful for the things you do not, you are able to be reborn into a higher state of consciousness.

This is a time of thanksgiving for the abundant harvest, so take some time to cultivate a spirit of gratitude. Be grateful for the things that you have instead of regretful for the things you do not. Mabon is an excellent time for reflection, magic, and gratitude. What will you do with this time?

Spiritual Significance and Symbolism

As the autumnal equinox arrives, it brings with it a time of balance and harmony. This is a time to give thanks for all that we have been given, and to contemplate our place in the world.

There are many symbols that can be used to represent this time of year. Colored leaves, wreaths made with autumn flowers, corn, maize, pine cones, vines, and acorns are all symbols of the second harvest. Scales, the imbas or awen, and doves are symbols of balance and harmony. The Goddess in her Crone aspect can also be represented by icons such as wolves and birds of prey like the eagle, the hawk, and the owl.

Take some time to reflect on what this time of year means to you. What are you grateful for? What inward journeys will you take during this time?

Seasonal Deities

Mabon is the celebration of the Golden Child, who is honored in various forms at this time of year. This God goes by many names, including the Green Man, or the Holly King, or Cernunnos, or Lugh, or the Lord of the Wild Hunt.

Autumn Equinox Common Traditions

Mabon is a time of thanksgiving, when we reflect on the harvest and give thanks for the abundance we have been given. It is a time to celebrate the second harvest, when fruits and vegetables are at their peak. Corn bread, apple cider, and other traditional Mabon fare are enjoyed during this time, as well as root vegetables, wines, and wild game. As we enjoy our feast, we take the time to contemplate how to bring balance to our own lives.

My Daily Practice

Many people think that to be a Pagan Monk requires big blocks of time set aside for prayer, chanting, and meditation. And while those things are a part of my practice, I've found that the most important part is integrating my spirituality into every aspect of my life.

For me, that means taking a few moments each morning and evening to center myself and connect with my deities. It means being mindful of my words and actions throughout the day, and taking time to reflect on how they might impact others. It means living with intention, and being grateful for the opportunities I have been given.

I know that not everyone has the same spiritual practice, but I hope that by sharing mine, I can provide some insight into what it means to be a Pagan Monk in today's world.

---

A typical morning routine for me starts with my shower. Feeling clean and fresh is symbolic to my practice -- I come before my gods and goddesses as clean as I can. Then, I begin my morning prayers. As a rule, a ritual known as the Sphere of Protection (SOP) is performed before the prayers start. This is a shared practice within the members of my Order, Church & Monastery and serves to center and balance the energies we work with as well as our own energy. Each day of the week is dedicated to a specific deity. Although every day, all of the Shining Ones, Ancestors, and Nature Spirits are venerated, each morning the focus of the prayers are to one member of the pantheon. After breakfast, I like to spend some time outside if the weather is nice. Just a few minutes of fresh air and sunshine helps me feel connected to the natural world - something that is very important to me as a Pagan and Druid.

The rest of my day varies depending on what's going on, but I always make sure to take a few moments each evening to give thanks for the good things in my life. No matter how stressful or challenging the day might have been, there is always something to be grateful for. For me, this is an important part of winding down before bed and preparing for the next day ahead. I also make sure to incorporate some Lectio Divina, or sacred reading. The premise is to read a piece of a poem, article, or chapter of a book and identify what stands out the most. Then, there are various levels of meditation known as discursive meditation on that word or phrase and how it applies to my life and the greater level of existence we find ourselves in.

---

Living spiritually doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. It's about being intentional in your thoughts, words, and actions - both big and small. If you're looking to incorporate more spirituality into your life, start by doing one thing each day with intention. Over time, you'll start to see how these little moments can add up to create big shifts in your life!
